I would be tempted to say yes, but that would be just by lazyness.
I gave a little try and did not have the problem:
- I have tried with WPrefs and it worked. Almost. Firefox did not survive, but that's its fault.
- I have tried with "wmsetbg" and I received a valid error message, and it worked after adding the missing parenthesis.

How did you perform the background change?
