Not sure if this is related to your problems but it sounds similar to what I experience. If I increase the font size of a gnome-terminal with the shortcut ctrl-+, so that the gnome-terminal grows larger than the screen width (perhaps height also, have not tried that), then WM will freeze and I have to hard reboot. I can't even switch to a console.
