If you want to use the KDE desktop (kicker, task manager, etc), it is best to just replace KWIN with Window Maker. If you intend to use the Window Maker dock, click, mini-windows, appicons, etc- it is best to start a Window Maker session. As an aside, I also have "gnome-settings-daemon &" in my autostart for Gnome apps.
