Modifying the environment

Is there a way to modify the value of Window Maker environment
variables?

Motivation:

I start wmaker from ~/.xsession, which is a "/bin/bash --login"
script. This means that all the environment variables that I want to
use are defined for wmaker, and hence for any processes started from
it.

Sometimes I want to modify an environment variable (eg PATH), and have
the modified value take effect for the rest of the X session. Is there
a way to change the value a running instance of wmaker uses for an
environment variable?

TIA.
