Thanks to all who helped. I have the converse problem now. How to I tell 
firefox that when I click in a mailto link to open thunderbird for me?

it's more generic than that. It's easily fixed though. Shut down 
thunderbird, and create a file called user.js in your 
~/.thunderbird/*.default/ directory with the following
