I spend most weekends on day and overnight hikes and outdoor excursions with at least one or two overnight trips each month. Although not as frequent I try and get a few longer multi night trips in each year. I backpack mainly in the Canadian Rockies but have hiked and climbed throughout western North America. I use my gear in a variety of outdoor sports including hiking, mountain scrambles’, mountaineering, ski touring, rock climbing, biking and for search and rescue. The gear that I enjoy using the most is well constructed, easy to use and is versatile. TEST PLAN Winters here and skiing is on the agenda for the next six months. My plan to test the BIRSA insulated Wind shirt is to run it through its passes over the course of four months of back country ski trips with some cross country skiing workouts. I would be looking at its overall construction, comfort during light to heave workouts, it’s wicking ability, how it works as a layer, it’s wind proofness and overall effectiveness as part of my winter gear. It will also be interesting to see how it holds up to being snowed on.This winter I typically get in about 15 to 25 days of skiing, mostly day trips but we have a few one and two night trips planned this winter utilizing both huts and tents. Temperatures range from –3 c (26 f) to –30 c (-22 f) with lots and lots of snow! We also experience varying degrees of wind from light breezes to intense wind on ridge tops.
