I am a little older than you and made this move a couple of years ago.  If
you can keep you total pack weight to 30 lbs; look at the Gossamer Gear
Mairposa pack with the double pocket hip belt..  I just replaced a heavier
REI lightweight pack with the Mariposa and am extremely happy with it.  If
your total pack is less than 40 you might want to look at the ULA line of
packs.  If you still want to filter your water, look at the Sawyer squeeze
filter with a Platypus 2L bag.  You also might want to look at Erik the
Black's blog.  He has some excellent lightweight advice that has helped me.
