The problem is that you have to use Sony's own proprietary Windows-only software to register your Sony reader with those bookstores, and there's no guarantee that this software will be supported or run on future versions of Windows. This may make it difficult to read the books you've purchased at some point in the future. Amazon's Kindle on the other hand is well integrated with Amazon's own bookstore, and it is unlikely that Amazon is going to quit supporting the Kindle anytime soon.
