There is a ton of free stuff available via Amazon for the kindle.  Basically any classic that is now in the public domain is available for free, and there is a ton of older stuff out there for cheap (under $5).  The main disadvantage with a kindle is that to a great extent you are dependent on Amazon, and that it is pretty convoluted to transfer things like map PDFs to a readable format for the kindle.

I'd avoid the sony, as I wouldn't be so certain that they'll continue to offer new material for it in the future, as I'm pretty sure it hasn't been too popular, and sony needs to do something about their overall profitability.
