It doesn't have to be a stocking, just one of the looser weaves: old bandana, old long underwear, old t-shirt, cotton sari cloth... Some of these might be enough to filter out the big baddies (hydatid tapeworm eggs or cholera) without massively slowing down filter rates. CL who has used bandannas as pre-filters, but doesn't carry any other sort of filter (she zaps with UV or boils).
