Here's something to think about.  A friend of mine and I go ice skating here in Alaska.  We go on lakes, rivers, sloughs. Marshes and any frozen water.  We can spend anywhere from one hour to a whole day.  Sometimes we go on canoe type trails where we have to "portage".  Most of the trips  are on a huge tidal flats area.  Ny friend takes videos of most of the trips.  You can find them at youtube by looking up theicedevise.  It's like taking a speed track through the wilderness.  Even when it snows or there is inclement weather, we can usually find some ice.
