Ice skating on lakes or wherever you can find it sounds like a lot of fun, especially if you’re certain that it’s safe. A friend of mine does that in the Sierra! Incredible pictures can come out of it, too.

At our end, backpacking is a year ‘round adventure, so when summer ends, we just keep on going! We teach wilderness skills to those who want continue their backcountry explorations every month. Sure, it gets really cold or real snowy or pretty wet, but with the right preparation and wisdom that comes from experience and training, anyone can stay out there and enjoy each new season as they come! This is our High Season as we specialize in teaching snow-hiking and general ski mountaineering in the sierra, especially Tahoe to Whitney along the PCT and JMT. 

“Bumper season” and winter hiking, when the whole environment around you changes to something you’ve never seen before just because of a little snow (doesn’t matter how deep it is) or nasty, non-ideal weather, is exhilarating and low-key (you’ve got to add in a little more safety awareness to your day) and fun. Here's something to think about. A friend of mine and I go ice skating here in Alaska. We go on lakes, rivers, sloughs. Marshes and any frozen water. We can spend anywhere from one hour to a whole day. Sometimes we go on canoe type trails where we have to "portage". Most of the trips are on a huge tidal flats area. Ny friend takes videos of most of the trips. You can find them at youtube by looking up theicedevise. It's like taking a speed track through the wilderness. Even when it snows or there is inclement weather, we can usually find some ice.
