Listed below is based upon my experience.

REI tends to be on the pricey end unless items are on clearance. That being said I tend to get my hiking shoes there so there's no issue returning them after a hike or two if they don't work out.

REI's garage sales (occasional sales of returned equip at the stores) are another good source. I once picked up a less than 5 lb,3 person tent for $80. 

steepandcheap.com Steep and cheap offers one item at time at a large discount. The same item usually pop up a few times over the course a week.

Even Walmart can be a good source of equipment especially for car camping as well as some backpacking uses.

I wouldn't suggest using the blue foam pad though. Get a good 2.5" inflatable, like a Big Agnes or similar on sale. Your back will thank you. 

And don't forget craigslist.

In short, use what you may already have if possible or low cost alternative if you're not sure. Use the books to guide purchases. 

Big thing is to get out there. Your equipment doesn't have to be perfect or most expensive, you can always add/subject based upon what works for you.
