A NYTimes article points to new technology that could very well be enough to keep electronics charged without zero days or a lot of excess equipment. I took a photovoltaic system I hacked together on my 2011 JMT attempt (see how I wore it here: http://goo.gl/C040X), but found it too hard to get enough consistent sun on it to keep up with the needs of my GPS and my camera. On my 2012 JMT, I dispensed with the GPS and got more batteries for the camera instead. But the thin-film gallium arsenide is getting us closer and closer to a solution. Backpackers -- especially on long-distance trails -- have similar problems to the military as described in the article.
