I don't think there's enough long-term research on the effects of long-term exposure to pyrethroids on humans to discount the possibility that exposure to high levels of loose pyrethroids on a long-term basis is a bad idea, but washing is a compromise that reduces your exposure while not affecting the ability of the clothing to repel insects.
