To maximize your battery life in areas where you do not have a cellular signal, you will want to disable your SIM using the SIM PIN lock function.  I read somewhere that the default SIM PIN is 1111 but cannot confirm.  Locking the SIM prevents the phone from looking for a cell signal yet still allows you to use the GPS if needed.  Still, put it into airplane mode whenever you are not using it.

As for rechargeable battery solutions, the Mophie Juicepack Powerstation Duo can provide 4 full recharges of a phone.  Best Buy probably carries them.   Another alternative is to use a solar panel but at the cost of almost 16 oz in extra weight.
