With the Lifestraw you can only drink, you can't process water for other uses.  With the squeeze bottle type filter you can filter water into another container for other uses.  Seldom do I filter water that I cook with feeling that boiling is more than adequate.  

When you fill a squeeze bottle the filter and the lid are not on the bottle.  Have never been worried about suspect water getting on the outside of the bottle, never thought the outside of the bottle was sterile anyway.

Neither one of these filters are really practical for someone who wishes to filter all of their water.  These solutions work best in areas where water seldom needs to be filtered and occasionally while on the trail you might drink from a suspect source.
