Richard, John Forester and many others have documented the case that cyclists fare best when they follow the Uniform Vehicle Code (versus riding against traffic, etc.). There are many studies, books, and papers on the subject that are easily available. Here are a few: http://www.bikeleague.org/programs/education/ http://bikexprt.com/ http://www.bicyclesolutions.com/ http://www.johnforester.com/NatSafCouncil/NSC.htm If t you have not yet taken one of EBBC's free Street Skills classes, I recommend that you start with one of them. Jim Strehlow mentioned making an unusual intersection crossing involving a RH turn followed by a U-turn, which is more complicated and more unusual (i.e., less expected by other drivers) than the normal means of crossing an intersection and continuing in the same direction. Jim's preferred behavior puts him at additional risk over maintaining a consistent direction of travel. (Unexpected behaviors that deviate from the 'rules of the road" are the ones that cause collisions.)
