How NOT to prevent bike theft: buy a $20 U-lock that can be forced open easily with a 2 x 4. You get what you pay for: look at the heft and construction of U-locks costing $20 - $90. You WILL see many added protections--as well as additional insurance offered--as the price goes up. http://www.flickr.com/photos/goldcoastjon/8022365809/in/set-72157631618185407/ See the original for yourself at the Berkeley Bike Station. This failed shackle--probably forced open using a piece of 2 x 4 lumber-- was found on the sidewalk by the bike station manager.
