Early in each workshop, I ask people for examples of resistance they're experiencing. The question and the timing may steer people to think of particular examples that have given them particular trouble, and have left them feeling stuck. So the context probably elicits examples of responses that do not further the interaction. It seems to me that "not seeming to further the interaction" is part of what leads us to interpret a response as resistance. If I saw someone's response as furthering the interaction, I don't think I'd call it resistance. > I don't know anything about the rest of the interaction. One of the ways I uses these responses is to ask participants to think of multiple possible interpretations. > There are a few exceptions, but there are a lot of "we" and > "it" pronouns. I never noticed the "we" and "it" and vagueness until someone pointed it out to me in a workshop a few months ago. Now that you and he have pointed it out, it's hard to miss. Your additional insight about contact is an eye opener for me. Thank you for these two nice insights: "Contact" and "furthering the interaction."
