I second Wayne's thoughts. The reasons both "to" and "not to" are quite varied. Many of the reasons (both ways) looked like they needed more information and may not be what's really driving the response. One pattern that I see is one regarding respect. Many of the reasons "not to" had to do with a lack of respect, either "I don't respect you" or "You didn't/aren't showing respect for me". For the most part, the reasons "to" had the same elements -- "I respect you" or "You showed/are showing respect for me". Interestingly, some of the reasons "to" were "you aren't going to give me respect if I don't". I'm thinking this last group could turn into viscious/malicious compliance. Ronald E. While on the surface there appears to be clusters I imagine that on further probing some uniqueness would emerge. I distinguish embracing from complying. Some of the "reasons to" could turn into passive resistance or malicious compliance. If I really want to know how much energy is with and against a change, I have a better chance if I make contact with individuals. But making contact is a lot of hard work. If I don't really care about the energy then why do all the work of discovering it? "Think of a time when someone asked you to do something, and you chose not to. What were your reasons for not doing what they asked?" 2. "Think of a time when someone asked you to do something, and you chose to do it. What were your reasons for doing what they asked?" I've posted about a hundred answers to each question in the files area for this group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/resistance-as-a-resource/files See the files: reasons-to.txt reasons-not-to.txt What patterns do you see in the "reasons to"? In the "reasons not to"? What similarities and differences do you see between the "reasons to" and "reasons not to"? Or between these reasons and the examples of "resistance" I posted earlier (in the resistance-examples.txt file)? What meanings do you make of these similarities and differences? What significance does all of this have for your change efforts (and for your efforts to resist)?
