I've been interested in the topic of "resistance" since February 
1995.  I'd recently started consulting, and was attending lots of 
professional association meetings in Boston and southern Maine. 
The meetings typically had a speaker who would offer good ideas, 
then answer questions from the audience.

As I was driving home after the third or fourth meeting like 
that, I noticed that many of the audience's questions for each 
speaker were of the form, "I know what we need to do, but how do 
I get people to /do/ it?"

I realized that I knew something about that, especially if I 
changed the goal slightly from "getting people to do it" to 
"engaging people about doing it."

I also realized that, though I knew something about that, I 
wanted to know more.  Thus began my quest to understand resistance.

A few months ago, it dawned on me that resistance might be a good 
topic for a Yahoo! group.  So I created one--this one.

 > 2. How do you feel about being here?

Excited, hopeful, and a little anxious.  (More about "anxious" 
below.)

 > 3. What would you like to have happen here?

I want to learn, and I want to tell you about what I've learned. 
  I'm a little anxious because I sometimes overly focus on 
telling people what I've learned, and when I do that I start 
acting in ways that show that maybe I haven't learned so much 
after all.

What I'd most like to have happen is a dialogue in which we share 
ideas, learn from each other, and help each other with specific 
challenges about resistance.

 > And one more question:  What else would you like us to know
 > about you?

I've recently started a weblog (Conversations with Dale), and I'm 
finding that the personal, conversational format is helping me to 
write about ideas that I've long wanted to write about.
