I know this pattern quite well myself.
I used it extensively when I had to write my diploma thesis in computer
science.
When you are writing a diploma thesis, there is just nowhere to hide.
When people read your work, they will see how good or bad you are. Since
writing was not my strong side, I was really scared that my professor
would see how bad I am. So I strongly resisted writing.
Of course I didn't know myself what actually happened. I just kept doing
all kinds of other things. With the help of my wife and a good friend of
mine I found out what actually happened inside of me. This was a large
step for me. I finally overcame my fear of failing and finished my
thesis. I learned a lot about writing and the result turned out ok for me.
Now I recognize this pattern more easily and can adjust accordingly.
My guess is, that a lot of people actually use this pattern.
Greetings,
Malte
