To stick with my example:
When I lose trust in my driving abilities, because of an accident I
have, I become a very careful driver. After a while without further
accidents I regain confidence and trust in my driving abilities again
and I drive with the same confidence I did before the accident.

This can also apply to people. Lets say someone does something to
destroy my trust in him. When I talk about it with him and tell him my
point of view he might genuine agree and change his behaviour. This
would regain trust in him and his behaviour. At the same time he might
later fall back into his old behaviour and destroy trust again.

I consider myself to be rather forgiving. I usually give people a new
chance. I'm more careful the second time, of course.
