Dale, Yes, let's explore. The responses we see and hear from people are often (maybe always) their outside response. These outside responses are clues to the inside response (which we cannot see or hear.) The inside response can be filtered and distorted by defense mechanisms. What finally becomes the outside response may not even resemble the inside response. In my experience the real resistance is inside and it requires some effort and tools to discover it. Before you can discover it though you first have to make contact. Telling people they shouldn't be afraid or that they should get over the inevitable are not effective ways of making contact in my opinion. You said something like, "People don't fear change > so much as they fear loss." I think that was Leader's Forum 1995, in a sesssion that was essentially one of my first resistance workshops. Now I need to give proper credit. I was summarizing an idea from William Bridges' book /Managing Transitions/. After briefly describing three examples of "resistance," Bridges says, "It isn't the /changes/ themselves that people in these cases resist. It's the losses and endings that they experience and the /transition/ that they are resisting." > If this is true, and I believe it is, one way resistance could > be a resource is to alert us to perceived losses. Yes. So one of the things I want to explore is how people's responses give information about what losses they may be perceiving. Sometimes it's easy. "I can't do that! My manager would fire me!" Sometimes it's more subtle. Dale -- Web: http://www.dhemery.com Weblog: http://www.dhemery.com/journal (Conversations with Dale) Yahoo!
