More precisely, I'd add, the more basic the threat of loss is *believed* to be, the more fundamental will be the resistance. An alcoholic doesn't really need alcohol, but the alcoholic does to some extent believe it's a basic need and may offer a lot of resistance to change. Also, the Apostle Paul writes, "For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain." [1] The belief in an afterlife lessens his concern for the physical. A person who doesn't believe in an afterlife would perhaps have more concern.
