E*speranto: a Language of Communication and Growth in Our BRICS States*
Put together, our BRICS States represent 40 per cent of the world’s
population and our economy is rapidly growing. The BRICS are now
embarking on a number of joint ventures and taking initiatives of common
interests.
If our Member States want to cooperate with the aim to enabling more
economic growth, it will be of a paramount importance to gradually
embrace a neutral common language which in our views would be an easier
task to implement and a more cost-effective one than the use of the
BRICS’ member States main languages, as these would overwhelm the
countries’ learning system only to produce half-baked results.
Esperanto, a UNESCO- recommended language to its member States,
including the BRICS countries, would be the solution to the
above-mentioned dilemma and was supposed to now be taught in our
schools. It is only due to the manipulation of the current
super-powerful countries that the recommendation in question have not
yet been given due attention to date.
It is well known that the language diversity of countries in economic
partnership will always have implications such as an increase in
translation and related costs while ultimately limiting what would be
otherwise achieved had a neutral language been in use for economic
cooperation and development. It is in our views possible to come up with
a practical solution without falling into a hegemony trap, provided we
adopt a proposed bilingual system which de facto would be made possible
by the use of a common neutral language (Esperanto). As BRICS countries
we should take advantage of the fact that the movement for the promotion
of an international neutral language has been in our midst for quite a
long time and its traditions have taken roots within.
We invite our progressive BRICS’ governments to demonstrate courage by
paving the way to following the UNESCO recommendations as cited earlier
on, as this is a just cause and a right thing to do, susceptible of
helping the people of our countries to be who they always wanted to be
while being able to relate with the rest of the world’s population.
