"Esperanto: Language of communication and growth among our BRICS States
Together, BRICS States represent 40 per cent of the world’s population, and our economy is rapidly growing. The BRICS are now embarking on a number of joint ventures and taking initiatives on common interests.
If Member States want to cooperate with the aim of enabling more economic growth, it is of paramount importance to gradually embrace a neutral common language which in our view would be an easier task to implement and a more cost-effective one than the use of the BRICS member States' main languages, as these would overwhelm the countries’ learning systems only to produce half-baked results.
Esperanto, a language recommended by UNESCO for its member States, including the BRICS countries, would be the solution to the above-mentioned dilemma and had been intended to be taught in our schools. It was only due to manipulation by the current super-powerful countries that that particular recommendation has to date not been given due attention.
It is well known that language diversity among countries in economic partnership will always have implications, such as an increase in translation and related costs, while ultimately limiting what would otherwise be achieved had a neutral language been in use for economic cooperation and development. It is in our view possible to come up with a practical solution without falling into a trap of one-sided hegemony, provided we adopt a proposed bilingual system which de facto would be made possible by the use of a common neutral language (Esperanto). As BRICS countries we should take advantage of the fact that the movement for the promotion of an international neutral language has been in our midst for quite a long time and its traditions have taken root.
We invite our progressive BRICS’ governments to demonstrate courage by paving the way to following the UNESCO recommendations cited earlier, as this is a just cause and the right thing to do, potentially helping the people of our countries to be who they always wanted to be while being able to relate to the rest of the population of the world.
