He grew up in a mulitlingual environment and recognised the usefulness of a language which people could use in international communication when their mother tongues were different. A century after his death, Esperanto is in daily use worldwide and features an extensive original literature, including poets nominated for the Nobel Prize. The internet has made it easy to access Esperanto, such that the language-learning platform *Duolingo* registered its one millionth learner for its Esperanto for English-speakers course in only two and a half years after launch. This year, Esperanto Day will occur during the 104th World Esperanto Congress, taking place in Lahti, Finland. Participants are travelling from every corner of the globe and yet no translators are needed because the whole event is in Esperanto. The World Esperanto Association, based in the Netherlands, enjoys consultative relations with the United Nations and with the Council of Europe, and the journal UNESCO Courier is published in an Esperanto edition= ..
