EPUB does not allow standalone images. epubmaker would have to wrap 
every `external´ image into a piece of HTML and then rewrite the link. 
Doable but:

- The EPUB would then contain 2 sets of images, the set of smaller 
images being completely redundant. (Kindle would contain 4 sets of 
images ...)

- Jumping to the image and back may even take a long time on older readers.


IMO 'click for larger image' is just stupid. Desktop browsers nowadays 
do a very good job of rescaling pics and they load the pics in the 
background anyway.
