That's one I'd agree with. I also take exception to the fact that he
doesn't know and doesn't (apparently) care to know the difference
between porn and sensual or erotic content. He's perpetuating
definitions and terms that do not appropriately apply. The definitions
are out there, and despite his personal lines, there are ones that are
relatively accepted, in the industry as a whole. Even NY is starting
to take note of the ones commonly used in indie, since the lines took
root there first, so readers moving from indie to NY for some reads
have established expectations.

> As for his comment about independent ebooks not being bestsellers, there I do take issue with him. Apparently, he's not aware of the phonomenal success of Darrell Bain and Jeannine Berry's "The Sex Gates", or of how many fine out-of-print authors like Jack Vance and Dave Duncan are enjoying a whole new career because of ebooks and Fictionwise.

And those bringing out NEW content in indie/e, as well. Note that
Piers Anthony's newest Incarnations of Immortality is coming from
Mundania, NOT NY. I've already mentioned some of NCPs success stories,
as well. Even Darrell's non-sensual/erotic work sells well, from what
I hear. As well it should. I enjoy his work, very much.

If Noel cares to examine it, he'll find that NY romance
publishers...and SF/F publishers, as well...are admitting (at
conventions and in magazine articles) that their new cross-genre, dark
romance and sensual/erotic romance lines (even erotica for women
lines) were started, BECAUSE they saw the success in indie/e of these
lines. They were selling and selling well, in indie. That made
adapting them to their own needs worthwhile to them. A smart business
move.

They nattered on and on about this, ad nauseum, for a number of years until they did a sudden about face and voted to admit all comers, including publishers.

And thank goodness, in my opinion. I am so glad to see the early RWA
shackles gone, and I know many others are, as well. I don't know if
you've been following this, Kate, but we also voted (this past spring)
to institute a "body of works" allowance. Since many authors write
short stories, released as stand-alones or in anthologies, to the
exclusion of all else, and have no single release of more than 30K, we
now allow a body of shorter works for membership.
