Sales tax

When the vendor decides to make it one, Ed. It's their option. OTOH,  
the only jurisdiction to date that tried to make Amazon pay state  
sales tax for having affiliates located in that jurisdiction--New  
York--had to rescind their decree by order of the governor so at this  
point the issue is moot unless you live in one of those states where  
Amazon has a physical presence.

As for the reviews not affecting sales, if the majority of those who  
posted the negative reviews did so having never used the device, it's  
small wonder people ignored them. I would, too. Utilizing a review  
system as a personal soapbox is an abuse of that system, right up  
there with people who have their friends and relatives post rave  
reviews of their books whether they've read them or not. Fortunately,  
most of the abusers aren't smart enough to make it look as if they  
know what they're talking about from actual experience.

Gadget looks interesting--and no, as I understand it, it uses Sprint  
wi-fi for which Amazon is apparently paying. I think I'll wait to see  
if Amazon does a Steve Jobs, though, and drops the price a bit once  
the gotta-have-one gadget addicts are finished scooping up the first  
few shipments.
