Yes, the EVDO wireless service (Amazon WhisperNet) is free.  It's mainly intended for auto-
delivering ebooks bought in the Kindle Store to the device.  However, there is what's 
described as a rudimentary, "experimental" text-oriented Web browser that can be used to 
access the Wikipedia, blogs, etc.  It's probably only marginally usable because of the slow 
display refresh rate and reviewers say that it "hates art," i.e., images.  Possibly it would be 
barely adequate for checking email and Yahoo groups like this one while out and about.
