Can't speak to this without knowing what model she has. The Touch,
which is basically an iPhone without the phone, has the same
capability for sending yourself Word and PDF files as the iPhone does,
and you can read PDF in the Safari browser. It's also hard to comment
not knowing what she means by "ebooks," because some people apply the
term to any kind of electronic file that's not work or email. Even the
original iPods could handle text files, but the file size was so
limited it wasn't possible to load an entire book onto them. So, if
the more current models allow larger files sizes on board, then,
again, it's quite feasible to read an ebook on an iPod.

However, doing so may mean making compromises with the quality of the
output, whereas a reader program designed specifically for use with an
iPod/iPhone would render the files in such a way they were much
"prettier." It would also likely add features like bookmarking and
perhaps even notes and such, like the Mobi and eReader programs do. As
it is, the experience is more likely one a committed ebook reader
would accept rather than someone who hasn't tried them.

One needs to keep in mind that the Kindle's target are the latter, not
the former.
