Kindle media reviews sometimes a little bizarre

I'm seeing an unaccountable gap between the reality of Kindle sales and recent media
reviews. Yesterday, for example, the Seattle Times carried a column by Glenn Fleishman
headed "Kindle not ready to catch fire" in which he says, ""The Kindle, with this design,
can't sell in the quantities Amazon intends." On the day his column appeared (Dec. 1),
Amazon's website carried the following message: "Due to heavy customer demand, Kindle
is temporarily sold out. Because we ship Kindles on a first-come, first-served basis,
please ORDER NOW to reserve your place in line. Your Kindle will not arrive by December
25th." Sounds to me like they're actually selling in quantities greater than Amazon
anticipated.
This reminds of local TV coverage of our 2001 earthquake in which, several hours after
the quake, a television reporter stood in front of the downtown ferry dock and
breathlessly announced that Puget Sound ferry traffic was completely paralyzed because
ferries couldn't leave the dock--while in the background a big ferry cast off and pulled
away from the dock...
I'm not trying to debate the merits of the Kindle here. It definitely isn't a replacement for
a Tablet PC, which is what this particular reviewer seems to have hoped for, and I
understand that he hates it for reasons that have perfect validity for him personally and
that I'm sure many other people would agree with. It just seems to me that he undermines
his credibility by not merely ignoring the fact that it's selling well but pontificating that it
can't sell well when it evidently is. Sounds like his antipathy to it is so intense that it's
making him blind to the actual market response.
