Actually, that's very common. Two of my children are mildly autistic,
and both have auditory processing disorders, including auditory
defensiveness. They also have tactile defensiveness. They do not have
problems with the written word, save one. Neither of them are capable
of learning sight words, which was a problem for them in Kindergarten
and first grade, where our local schools teach ONLY sight words and no
phonics. They were both put in Reading Recovery in second grade, where
they were taught phonics and excelled at reading. They must use
phonics, though they have both become so adept at it that they can
read faster and with better retention than many other kids their own
age, those who do use sight words. They typically test at reading at 3
or more years above their age level.

My own problem with auditory stems from a mild processing
disorder...mainly cross-noise confusion. I can't separate strands,
when too many overlap. For that reason, my husband is talking about
getting me a pair of noise-canceling headphones. As long as the room
around me is fairly quiet, I have no problems with listening to audio
books and/or doing audio edits. In fact, it's preferred, when I have
quiet moments, to do an auditory edit.
