RE: Any chance of still using a REB1100 in 2008?

RB files can be loaded from any machine to the memory card. RB format titles
can be  purchased from Fictionwise and the Mac Version of Rocket librarian
can create from Html then transferred to the memory card to use.

IF you wish to continue along these lines:

I have a copy of the Mac version of RocketLibrarian for the Rocket eBook. I
have no idea whether it works with a REB1100.

Given that a) Nuvomedia and Gemstar are long out of business, and b) the
software is only useful if you have purchased an eBook device and thereby
contributed to the company's revenue, I'd be willing to stretch a point and
make a copy for you if you will send me a self-addressed, stamped CD mailer.
Contact me via email and I'll give you my address... However, first
consider:

a) I have no idea whether the Nuvomedia software works with the REB1100
device. _It probably doesn't,_ since the Nuvomedia software expects to
communicate via RS232 and I believe the REB1100 uses USB.

b) It's Mac OS 9 software, and thus only runs under Mac OS X in "Classic"
mode... which only exists on Mac OS X 10.4 and earlier and only on machines
with Power PC processors, i.e. none made within the last two years.

c) It's somewhat buggy.

d) I've do have it working under Classic on a Power PC Mac Mini, running OS
X 10.4.x, with a USB-to-serial converter. (Remember, mine is an original
Nuvomedia Rocket eBook, not a REB1100).

The battery life on my Rocket eBook is now down to about 2-3 hours (from its
original 20). I think mine is close to achieving brickhood, regardless of
software support. How about yours?

P. S. It appears as if the One Laptop Per Child XO laptop may be a
completely practical eBook device for any material which can be obtained in
unprotected PDF format... which, of course, you can produce on a Mac by
printing and selecting the "save as PDF" option. It seems to be happy with
book-length PDFs produced by Mac OS X in this way. I haven't tried it out
for real, in the sense that I have not actually sat down and read a book
this way, yet.
