Not exactly. In a former life I was a royalty accountant. The reserve for returns is against the royalties, NOT the advance. It reduces the amount of royalties the author gets now, so that the author won't owe the publisher money back because of returns.

No, the author does pay for returns. Returns reduce the royalties due to the author. The reserve means that the author's royalties are reduced at the same time or before the returns happen (but after the books are sold). But the author clearly gets less money because of returns.

This is very true. And since the advance is fixed, many times the author gets more than what the royalties would have paid, simply because the publisher has paid more than the book turned out to sell.
