Huh? Freddie you will have to support this one. I don't believe its true at all.

Returns simply means that bookstores are allowed to return copies that they can't sell.

It is an inducement to the bookstore to stock more copies of a title than it would otherwise, in order to keep the bookstore (and through them the publisher) from loosing sales because a customer can't find a copy of the book on a store shelf. This way the bookstore doesn't bear the risk of the book not selling. The publisher and author bear this risk when the book is returnable.

This works for Piers Anthony because his books make money.

Under this same deal, if the book looses money, Anthony would have to pay the publisher his share of the loss.

A royalty deal keeps the author from having to face this latter problem -- something that midlist and lower authors would probably have to face regularly.

I'm not saying that Anthony's deal isn't wise, or that others shouldn't consider it. I'm only saying that it does have a downside, and probably isn't best for all authors.
