As you say, more venues for conversation.

In one of his New Yorker essays on the charms of Paris during his
student year in the 1920's, A. J. Liebling writes of the girls of
easy virtue who frequented the student district:

  Above all, they had anticipated a theory that was to be imparted to
  me later as a great original discovery by T. S. Matthews, an editor of
  Time, who told me that the content of communication was unimportant.
  What did count, Matthews said, was somebody on one end of a wire
  shouting, "My God, I'm alive!", and somebody on the other end
  shouting, "My God, I'm alive too!"

Perhaps there are just more other people around who know what we're
talking about, who frequent Google Books or have Sony Readers.  Readers
feel less need to come to this particular place and shout.
