RE: Why?

As far as my sabotaging a 'business deal' of Mr Reitz'a with another
publisher, 
that particular statement is not only untrue, it is libelous. 

As Mr Reitz well knows, there was no 'business deal'. The other publisher
told 
me at the time that he had decided not to go beyond any preliminary
discussion 
with Mr Reitz for reasons that had nothing to do with me, and I'm sure he'd
be 
happy to tell Mr. Reitz just that if he bothered to ask him, which 
he obviously hasn't.

 

 

Freddie, I said I'd rather not get back into it.  The truth is not libelous
and I still have copies of all the emails between the other publisher and
me, copies of your original emails where you make the accusations against
us, and the others between you and me where I questioned why you would do
something like that and your responses.  Your original message which stated
we were in trouble of going out of business is black and white.  Since I
talked with this person directly several times, I do have the truth.

 

And for the record, NO publisher has a deal with Piers where he shares the
profits and expenses.  I can provide a statement from Piers if you would
like.

I didn't say *which* publisher, did I? 

Piers Anthony described his licensing arrangement with his main publisher in

great detail in his autobiography How Precious Was That While, as well as
why he 
was recommending licensing instead of a standard royalty arrangement. Had Mr

Reitz read Mr Anthony's autobiography, which he evidently has not, he would
have 
known to which publisher to which I was referring and that it was *not* 
Mundania. 

As for Mr Reitz's aspersions on my character and motives, they're the
product of third hand gossip and, as 
such, not worthy of response. To whit, Dan Reitz and I are strangers who met
once during an EPIC convention in 
Florida more years ago than I care to remember and we've never spoken since.


Not 
only does this gentleman have no personal knowledge of me or my character
whatsoever, he had never read any of my books at the time of our encounter
and probably 
hasn't to this day. However, that didn't deter him from telling me, in an
email and in his capacity as 
its president, that my titles would never be welcome at Mundania. 

According to 
the Merriam Webster Dictionary the definition of 'blacklist' is as follows.
"A 
list of persons or organizations that have incurred disapproval or suspicion
or 
are to be boycotted or otherwise penalized". 

Mr Reitz's statement to me definitely meets the 'blacklist' definition
because he then went 
on, in his role as a newly elected officer of EPIC, to collude with others
in an attempt to ban me from 
the EPIC listserv and then expel me from the organization altogether, (and I
doubt that he's kept his mouth shut about me since). 

To their credit, the list's moderators refused to ban me because, according
to them, I had done nothing wrong; and after I pointed 
to the rest of the EPIC Board that the expulsion attempt was in flagrant 
violation of their own bylaws and forwarded them a copy of the 'warning' I
had received, no more was said about it. 

When my membership came up for renewal several months later, it was I who
chose not to renew and, ironically, when they failed to do so I had to ask
EPIC to 
please remove me from their listsev. 

When my decision to leave became known, a 
surprisingly large number of EPIC folks asked me privately to reconsider. 
However, by that time I'd had enough and told them no. 

According to my understanding, Ms Brenna Lyons has no personal knowledge of 
what went on when I was a member of EPIC and she's as much a stranger 
to me as Mr Reitz. Therefore, since she is also Mr Reitz's employee as well
as an 
officer of EPIC, I am forced to take anything she says in this regard with a

very large grain of salt.

Mr Reitz's other comments about me and my supposedly evil motives vis a vis
EPIC are, infortunately, only too 
typical of the adolescent, thinskinned, unprofessional, knee jerk responses
to the slightest criticism of EPIC which have caused so many of its more
thoughtful members to leave sfter only a brief exposure to the listserv.
Actually, this entire thing would be laughable if it weren't for the poor
image it is creating about independent epublishing in the minds of those
who, not knowing any better, consider EPIC to be representative of our
industry. 

In closing, Mr Reitz would do well to keep in mind my grandmother's old
saying "When you point a finger at someone else, you have three pointed back
at you". And that's all I have to say on the subject.
