Web-based books

Everyone,

In studying the future possibilities of web-based books (which itself
is a quite broad term and can mean both online and off-line), I'd like
to see discussion (with examples) of the different ways web-based
books are today being implemented, as well as discussion of new ideas.

This includes both "free" books (e.g. public domain) and commercial
titles.

(Yes, I'm familiar with Project Gutenberg HTML ebooks, many of which
were produced by DP, so no need to mention them unless there is a
particular PG title having an unusual online implementation that will
add to this discussion.)

I'm also interested in how the books may be presented. There are
essentially two approaches: 1) the book is in a single. linear web
page, and 2) the book is broken up into separate web pages which are
interlinked. How tables of contents, notes, and title pages are
implemented is of interest.

And of course there's the two approaches for general access: 1) over
the Internet, and 2) downloaded and read locally. For #2, packaging
of the "web-book" is certainly part of the equation.

For commercial titles there may be different models being experimented
with, including paid password access, and open access using adverts
and/or affiliate models. (Yes, I am familiar with O'Reilly books, some
of which are freely online and revenue is derived from selling the
paper copy.)

Your examples, as well as insights, new ideas and of course criticisms,
are invited for discussion.
