conundrum Fees for extraordinary expenses

  Conundrum:   Why is it that most of my mails go from A to B in a flash, but those that are part of a discussion flow seem to dilly dally and take for ever?  - this one had wandered the world for 18 hours...

  It seems to me that this is only an issue because publishers are 
  prepared to pay in advance for work that the author has not yet done, 
  But why is this so?

  Probably because it is a most human of activities and in the 'creative' area. If you think of most publishing as R&D it might make more sense. Sometimes the Harry Potter gem turns up, but mostly the discoveries are good bread and butter stuff like Agatha Christie or Dummies, often with a long, long tail.

  Also the industry incorporates many roles, so there is often confusion if one thinks simply of 'publishing', which is perhaps more the system than the intention.
