The term is a straight lift from the time when infringers were (and  
many still are) reprinting your editions and selling them. Some  
infringers now copy ebooks and sell them. (I would be dubious that  
Chinese for-profit infringers outsell the P2P networks as a whole,  
though, especially in music. Do you have a source for this?)

The worst of the infringers move a LOT of copies, and whether they do  
so for money (ad revenue is definitely an issue) or for kudos, they  
do profit.

But, in the end, I agree with you: thief works better.
