The real problem with the real "pirates" is that it's hand in glove
with organized crime. A zillion years ago, I remember reading about
how the FBI usually found software piracy in the money laundering
chain of drug running. The reason not to buy pirated software was
then, "do you really want to be supporting the drug trade and
organized crime?" Exactly.

But the casual infringement by users isn't the same thing and
shouldn't BE the same thing. Back in the day, I knew the ins and outs
of Napster. I tried a little music and went on to buy the CD's. I
downloaded a lot of stuff that I owned on tape (and never could
transfer to CD). But, when they closed down Napster and started sueing
grandmothers, I went back to buying exactly as many CD's as I had
bought before--about 4 per year... down from 10-15 per year because MY
personal economy sucked and I was spending money on music lessons for
my kids, not music for my car.

I've long fought the perm "piracy" and long disagreed with the RIAA's
tactics and their assertions that if they stopped ALL casual
infringement that they would make that much more dough. They wouldn't.
Most people, I think are like me. They don't buy because they don't
have the money to buy.

**shrug**

YMMV.
