I think these things must be tailored.  For example I publish in ebook 
form because at this point in time my genre sells stronger in ebook 
form than print (e.g. erotica for women, novella length fiction).  Thus 
it would probably make more sense for me to give out free p-books in a 
hope of selling more ebooks--that's where my market lives.  Now for my 
high fantasy, sure, the reverse might be useful.  However the only way 
to be sure would be to gamble with a novel it probably took me a year 
to write. I would rather look out how it is working out for others 
(tangible data for comparable books) than 'suck it and see'.
