  JH:   This is where I part company with the 'AI is good' school.   The problem is not that AI cannot do this, and maybe even do it to a tolerable standard, but that all that it does of this sort is of the past.

  Its algorythms [or whatevers] will be based on what is regarded as good style, grammar, word use and frequency and so on at that moment [very subjectively] and that will be a summation not of that present, but of that past - whether it be days, weeks, months or years.

  'Good' books - or perhaps 'great' books - are often the ones that chart new territory.   So Joyce's crap - er that is to say literary masterpieces - lacked all that editors and publishers normally looked for at that moment.  'The Visiters by Daisy Ashford' was important and a 'good' book because ofthe age of the person who wrote it, and how competent it was bearing tht in mind.

  In normal publishing terms it needed substantial editing - but that would have killed the point.

  There is no filtering in this - in my subjective opinion ;-) - that beats a whole army of subjective agents, editors and publishers.   And that is the difficulty in any fundamental change in the system.

  I'll put aside for the moment the multitude of purposes of books that are published...
