  A 'good book' is one that returns enough to the author (financially or 
  emotionally) to make him/her want to write another. 

  JH:   That is a successful book, surely.   And why assume an author has a second book in them?   This is the difficulty I see.   

  JH:   While all the comments I have read are thoughtful and interesting I see a lot of generalisations about a very diverse industry.   I am wondering if there is a need to think of genres and segments;  niches and purposes;  and recognise the diferences within as well as between fiction and non-fiction.   Only after some discussions of that does it become possible to generalise.    I could be wrong of course...
