Interesting AP news story about Kindle and the ebook market

This morning a local radio news site is carrying an AP story entitled "Amazon.com's Kindle
helps tiny e-book market". The URL is:
     http://www.komoradio.com/news/tech/17270864.html

Some interesting points:

"Publishing officials ... say that they have seen double digit increases in e-book sales
since the Kindle's release, including renewed interest in downloads on the Sony Reader."

"'The Kindle has increased awareness. Publishers have told me that in some cases the Sony
numbers were double or triple to what they had been,' says Michael Smith, head of the
International Digital Publishing Forum, which tracks e-book sales."

I've noticed increases in sales of some of my ebook editions the past couple of months
(although, interestingly, not in Mobipocket format sales), so perhaps all the publicity about
the Kindle has indeed stimulated interest in ebooks and people are finding the current
generation of mobile devices more satisfactory for reading them than those of a few years
ago.

I was surprised to read that "'The market is very narrowly confined, to New York and
Seattle and to a few people who travel and read a lot,' says Frank Daniels III, chief
operating officer for Ingram Digital, a leading e-distributor."

Living in Seattle as I do, I haven't noticed anything to make me think interest in ebooks is
any greater here than elsewhere in the U.S. Specifically, I have yet to see anyone reading
on a Kindle.
