Kindle and print book sales

Browsing the Amazon Kindle discussions just now, I ran across a comment from CTMom
about a way of using the Kindle that hadn't occurred to me:
"...I was at Borders today & got 3 different samples of titles that caught my eye (as opposed
to walking out with 3 new books)! Then, after I've read the sample, IF I want to buy the
[print] book I can do that..."
In other words, she takes her Kindle to a bricks and mortar bookstore, browses for
interesting looking titles, downloads the Kindle edition samples from Amazon on the spot,
and then reads them to decide whether to buy a particular print book or not. This is
interesting because it suggests that the Kindle could actually have a positive effect on the
sales of print books in some cases.
As far as Kindle edition sales are concerned, this comment was in a thread entitled "Must
fight the urge.." in which people discuss ways to resist the temptation to buy ebooks from
the Kindle Store--the main suggestion is to download a sample to help satisfy the urge to
impulse buy.
